How to Clean a Silk Eye Mask: A Step-by-Step Guide

Silk eye masks are a valuable addition to your sleep routine. They block out light, helping you achieve deeper, more restful sleep, and their smooth, natural fibers are gentle on your skin and hair. To maintain their quality and longevity, cleaning your silk eye masks semi-regularly will keep it fresh.

Silk eye masks feature hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial properties that reduce the need to wash them as frequently. They also have non-absorbent features, which means the natural oils your skin produces during the night stay on your skin instead of being transferred to the mask. This is unlike other more absorbent materials such as cotton, linen and polyester mixes.

However, despite these great natural properties, we expect you might want to keep your eye mask as fresh and clean as possible so that it:

  • Maintains hygiene and prevent skin irritation or breakouts.
  • Preserves the fabric’s softness, sheen, and durability.
  • Ensures the mask continues to provide a clean, comfortable sleep experience.
  • Has a lovely scent that will drift you to sleep.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these supplies:

  • Gentle detergent (preferably one designed for silk or delicate fabrics)
  • Cold water
  • A clean, dry towel
  • A basin or sink
  • White vinegar (optional, for deep cleaning)

Step-by-Step Cleaning Instructions

  1. Read the Care Label

Always start by checking the care label on your silk eye mask. Our silk eye masks are in fact machine washable but we often find it easier to handwash as the item is so small and its a really quick activity!

  1. Prepare the Cleaning Solution

Fill a basin or sink with cold water. Add a small amount of gentle detergent, mixing it until it’s fully dissolved. Avoid using harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, as these can damage the silk fibers.

  1. Hand Wash the Eye Mask

Submerge the silk eye mask in the water, gently agitating it with your hands to loosen any dirt and oils. Let it soak for about five minutes. Gently rub any stained or soiled areas with your fingers, but be careful not to scrub or wring the fabric, as this can cause damage.

  1. Rinse Thoroughly

Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, cold water. Swirl the eye mask in the water to remove all soap residues. You may need to rinse it a few times to ensure all detergent is washed out.

  1. Optional: Vinegar Rinse

For an extra step, you can add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the rinse water. This helps to neutralize any remaining soap and restore the silk’s natural luster.

  1. Drying the Silk Eye Mask

After rinsing, gently squeeze out excess water without twisting or wringing the fabric. Lay the eye mask flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel up with the mask inside and press gently to remove additional moisture. Unroll the towel and lay your eyemask flat on a dry towel or hang it to air dry, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

Additional Tips

  • Frequency of Cleaning: If using your eye mask regularly, we recommend cleaning it every two weeks, or more frequently if you apply skincare products before wearing it.
  • Storage: Store your clean, dry eye mask in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and maintain its quality.

Maintaining your silk eye mask with proper cleaning ensures it remains an effective part of your sleep routine. By following these simple steps, you can keep your eye mask fresh, clean, and in excellent condition, allowing you to enjoy its benefits night after night. Embrace the gentle care routine your silk eye mask deserves, and it will reward you with lasting comfort and usefulness.
